spinning numbers Hannah’s waiting for the summer to get here quick so her worksheets and assignments won’t be able to make her sick as a sophomore she didn’t think that math would cost more time... than it has and her anxiety won’t pass (no, it won’t) she’s nocturnal she’s writing in her journal every night hoping things will turn out alright and Maddie can’t believe that people work before three and go to bed before four — well, that’s p.m. and a.m., respectively and her boss is a hardass he’s on a warpath with the bar staff and when you’re up all night doing chores — well, you get a little bored [chorus] + she’s nocturnal she’s hoping that her turn’ll come one day and she can find a better workplace and Sara says it’s better not to sleep at all she’s clearly never heard of daytime the night belongs to her and every person in her circle making things for people who get up for their nine-to-fives she needs the solitude that night gives to feel safe I guess she’s more herself that way [chorus] + she’s nocturnal she’s hoping that her turn’ll come one day and she can find a better workplace and she can be happy in the first place

no one cares about your hobbies ...sorry and no one cares about the errands you had to run today so wouldn’t it be nice to have someone you could vent to all the time someone you would listen right back to oooo you don’t need to complicate it what you need is a teammate you need somebody who will be there all the time yeah, what you need is a teammate you don’t need to fixate anymore all your problems will solve themselves in time in time do you get sad... ’cause you don’t have plans and you don’t know when you’ll see anyone and do you get burnt... ’cause people will hurt you even the ones you like to be with so wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who would never leave you behind someone with some constant mutual trust it’s a must (extended) [chorus] this isn’t the first — or the worst — iteration of this problem people have been lonely since the dawn of time and why can’t you tell? it’s partially you and it’s partially everybody else but that person is out there [chorus] [shout chorus]

quantifiable and insincere you use the things you know to keep your distance from everybody here and right or wrong you were always right all along -- that’s what you’ll tell yourself recently we’ve been acting like cavemen You might say, “There’s no way to save them” save them I’m not as happy as I used to be my ego and my need to keep it up is killing me and right or wrong I was always right all along -- that’s what I’ll tell myself [chorus] mastery, and pride that’s still no excuse to treat everyone so unkind you’ve got your ideas on your side but they’re only a way of measuring your size it seems that we have always been cavemen There’s only different worlds to make that statement in and right or wrong it was always us all along

we’re sitting in a park a couple feet apart nothing to do but talk until we feel a spark I’ve heard there’s a lot of good shows lately I had a couple plans for the year but they got dashed it’s crazy to me how it happened so fast I still try not to get angry you ask me what I would do if we were living in a different universe I think I’ve got your answer, here I asked respectfully if you’d imagined how things could get worse than living in between years so what TV have you been watching while our country falls apart? a remedy to keep you waiting while we’re scraping in the dark to find ourselves rock-bottom mental health I lost my sense of self nothing anybody else could do to help still, we all tried to do our best you’re living with your folks that used to be a joke til everyone got fired and now we feel the smoke rising like the plumes throughout the West so what TV have you been streaming while our country falls apart? a remedy to keep you dreaming while we’re screaming in the dark to find ourselves and everyone’s exhausting from holding so tightly for so long and all the facets of fear everyone’s depleted from holding on and on and on and living in between years so tell me: are you ready for it? for our country to fall apart? going up and red and black and orange while we forage in the dark to find ourselves can anybody help? and that unnatural blue glare: signals waving in air gave proof through the night that some hope was still there but I'm sick I'm sick of living I'm sick of living in between years

the doctors say it’s trouble with the way her synapses fire basically, it’s impossible... for Anne to get inspired her dad’s tips don’t work the podcasts don’t help it doesn’t do any good to talk to anyone else she keeps her head down in case things look... up [chorus] she’s been overwhelmed... with Annhedonia she doesn’t enjoy anything anymore her friends say that she’s well-adjusted she knows she’s everyone’s most trusted confidante but what she wants is to be listened to for once her family says she’s mentally healthy but the way depression creeps is stealthy she wants to scream -- like “help me! I’m not as happy as everyone thinks I am” [chorus] + and it’s been awhile... since she’s felt euphoria she doesn’t enjoy anything anymore her attitude hasn’t always been this abysmal but now conversation just annoys and everything she used to like feels dismal and all her favorite bands just sound like noise [chorus] [+] she’s been underwhelmed... with everything in life including all of the stuff that she’s supposed to like

about

Zaq Baker Minneapolis, Minnesota

Once described by a graphic designer as “really whiny” and by a Twin Cities local as “like the male Taylor Swift," Zaq’s melody candy recounts heartbreak and mental health with grand piano at the center and a full pop/rock/emo pit orchestra. Showtunes, emo revival, and bright, accessible, forthright lyrics form the backdrop for a unique, relatable collection. New album out February 4th!!!!! ... more
